EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. – The New Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs will hold its 5,000th performance Friday, May 23 at 8:30 p.m., as part of its 40th anniversary celebration season.

More than 7.4 million people have seen the story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection as told on an outdoor stage in the hills of the Ozark Mountains since the play opened in July 1968.

“We’re so pleased to be able offer such grandiose and uplifting family entertainment here in the Ozarks Mountain of Arkansas,” said Keith Butler, chairman of the board of The Great Passion Play.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the play has been revamped with parables and text from different gospels in The New Testament, focusing on more miracles Christ performed in the days before his crucifixion and the days before his ascension.

Those returning to see the play can still expect to find more than 150 actors and live animals on the 550-foot stage, but more than 90 percent of the scenes are new, along with the introduction of a new character – Satan.

Performances run May 2 through Oct. 25 at 8:30 p.m. nightly, excluding Wednesdays and Sundays, although there will be a special Sunday performance this Memorial Day weekend. For more information, visit GreatPassionPlay.com or call 1-800-882-7529.
