Winston Salem, NC- October 28th, 2006 was an exciting night for Southern Gospel Music as The Southern Gospel Music Awards were presented by Caraway Media Group at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston Salem, NC. Fans cheered on their favorites as CMG’s Charles & Matt Brady along with Co-Host Tony Greene delivered the fast paced awards program filled with excitement and a few surprises.
New to the program this year was the addition of performances by a couple of the award winning artists including Kirk Talley & TaRanda Greene performing “ Oh Lamb Of Calvary” the song that got Kirk Talley & Allison Durham Speer an award for Duet of the Year. Kirk also won the “Favorite Tenor & Favorite Songwriter” awards. TaRanda Greene who won both Female Soloist & Song of the Year performed her award winning song “Sky Full Of Angels” and the Hoppers who garnered an astounding 6 awards performed their hit song “Jerusalem” which also won as the Video/DVD of the Year.

Other awards presented to America’s Favorite Family of Gospel Music included “Favorite Mixed Group” and Karlye Hopper took the award for “Favorite Junior Artist” and Connie Hopper took home the award for “Favorite Alto.” Kim Hopper took the awards for both “Favorite Soprano & Favorite Female Vocalist.”

Other notable winners this year included Roger Bennett being chosen for the coveted “Person Of The Year” award and Ivan Parker winning the “Favorite Male Soloist” award. Paul Heil host of the well known syndicated radio program “The Gospel Greats” won “Favorite Radio Personality” and radio station WJBZ of Tennessee took the fans “Favorite Radio Station Award.”
Tin Duncan of the Signature Sound Quartet won for “Favorite Bass” and Guy Penrod of the Gaither Vocal Band won both “Favorite Lead & Favorite Male Vocalist”. One of Bluegrass Music’s most popular groups, the Isaacs, won “Favorite Band” & Sonya Isaacs won the “Favorite Musician” award.
The awards “Favorite Concert Promoter” went to Ray Flynn of Ray Flynn Promotions & Abraham Productions and for the third consecutive year fans voted the “Gatlinburg Gathering” by Abraham Productions as their “Favorite Concert or Event” of the year.
The coveted “Favorite Male Quartet” award went to the Gaither Vocal Band for the third consecutive year. The award for “Favorite Trio” went to The Booth Brothers as did the coveted “Album Of The Year” award for “The Blind Man Saw It All.” The award for “Favorite Regional Artist” went to Victoria Huggins.
Special appreciation plaques were presented by Caraway Media Group to Premier Builders of Winston Salem, NC for their corporate sponsorship of The Southern Gospel Music Awards and to Ray Flynn Promotions for hosting the awards show in conjunction with the Christians Alternative to Halloween Event.
